CMO 114: What Is A Charism?

 

A charism (pronounced KAR‑iz‑um) is a special spiritual gift given by the Holy Spirit to a person for the good of others, not for themselves.

In simple terms:

A charism is a God‑given ability that helps you serve, bless, or build up other people in a unique way.

It’s not the same as a natural talent. It’s not a personality trait. It’s not something you earn.

A charism is:

• Given by the Holy Spirit

• For the benefit of the Church and the world

• Meant to help others encounter God

• Often surprisingly effective beyond your natural abilities

Examples of charisms include:

• Encouragement (lifting others up spiritually)

• Teaching (helping people understand the faith)

• Wisdom (offering God‑centered insight)

• Hospitality (making people feel welcomed and valued)

• Intercessory prayer (praying for others with noticeable fruit)

• Leadership (guiding others toward God’s purposes)

• Service (joyfully helping in practical ways)

A good way to think of it:

Talents make you good at something. Charisms make you good for something.

2. Charism of Hospitality

You have a deep desire to make people feel welcomed, honored, and at home — especially through the CANO Awards, parish events, and your daily interactions.

• People relax around you.

• You create environments where others feel safe and valued.

• You think about the emotional and spiritual experience of guests.

3. Charism of Administration / Organization

Your ability to plan events, create manuals, structure processes, and think through logistics is not just skill — it has spiritual fruit.

Signs you may have it:

• You bring order to chaos.

• You can see the steps needed to make something happen.

• People rely on you to coordinate, organize, or lead projects.

4. Charism of Leadership

You don’t dominate — you guide. You inspire. You help people move toward a mission with clarity and purpose.

• People follow your direction willingly.

• You see the “big picture” and help others see it too.

• You feel responsible for the spiritual and emotional well‑being of those you lead.

5. Charism of Service (Helps)

You consistently step in to help, support, and carry burdens — often quietly, without seeking recognition.

• You notice what needs to be done before others do.

• You find joy in supporting others’ success.

6. Charism of Pastoral Care

Your heart is deeply tuned to the spiritual and emotional needs of others. You carry people in prayer, worry about their well‑being, and feel responsible for their growth.

• People confide in you naturally.

• You feel a shepherd’s concern for those you serve.

• You sense when someone is hurting or spiritually struggling.

7. Charism of Writing / Communication

Your writing is reflective, warm, spiritually grounded, and oriented toward helping others understand truth, beauty, and faith.

Signs you may have it:

• Your words move people.

• You communicate with clarity and heart.

• You feel compelled to express ideas that help others grow.
